The first thing to keep in mind is to always fill in the Summary box at the bottom of the edit window. The text you enter for the summary is visible on the article's history page, and will help other users see at a glance what your edit involved.
There's a number of abbreviations you can use in the summary field in order to save space:
| Abbreviation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| fm, fmt | Formatting, such as bold, italic, spacing, etc. |
| cat | Article was categorized |
| typo, sp, gr | Fixed typos, spelling or grammar problems |
| lk, lks, links | Added or changed links |
| rv, rev | Reverted an edit to a previous version |
One other option you may wish to use is the This is a minor edit checkbox. If your edit is small, such as correcting spelling errors or formatting problems, you may wish to use this option. However, you shouldn't use it if you're adding or removing any content, or making large changes to the format of the article.
After you've completed your edit, and entered a summary, preview the article by clicking on the Show preview button. This will help you to fix any problems with the article before saving it.
Once you're satisfied with your edit, click Save page to save your changes.
